Review of Dictionary of Fine Distinctions: Nuances, Niceties, and Subtle Shades of Meaning by David C. Schmidtz
As a lifelong word nerd, I couldn’t resist the allure of Dictionary of Fine Distinctions: Nuances, Niceties, and Subtle Shades of Meaning by David C. Schmidtz. I was intrigued by the promise of clarity and deeper understanding in the bewildering world of English confusables. After all, this language we adore is notorious for its various nuances, often leaving even seasoned speakers scratching their heads. I dove in, eager to explore the fine distinctions that could refine my linguistic arsenal.
On the surface, the book appears to be an elaborate dictionary, filled with distinctions not only between common words but also across various topic areas. At over 200 pages, it’s a mosaic of pairs, triads, and quartets of confusables that cover everything from geography and mathematics to architecture and music. Some distinctions I knew well, like goblins, ogres, and trolls, while others surprised me, such as the differences between pidgin and creole or the bewildering world of caffeinated beverages that left me grappling with my morning orders (latte vs. flat white vs. cappuccino vs. cortado — anyone?).
What struck me most about Schmidtz’s book was the evident love and effort put into compiling these distinctions. Each entry includes delightful black-and-white illustrations, making even the more obscure terms entertaining to explore. However, as my journey continued, I couldn’t help but feel a bit overwhelmed. The term "dictionary" misled my expectations; it doesn’t stick to common language confusables. Instead, it branches into dense territory, mixing jargon that would likely only resonate with a select audience of enthusiasts or professionals. Just when I thought I had a grip on the basics, I was jolted into convoluted comparisons like "ironies" dissected into dramatic and verbal nuances that bordered on excessive.
The book’s organization also left much to be desired. Without a clear structure, I found myself flipping through entries that felt random and sporadic, disrupting the flow of reading. Seriously, a bit of alphabetical order or thematic grouping could have simplified the experience!
Despite its challenges, I found joy in the comparisons, especially at the beginning and end when Schmidtz expertly sets the stage and wraps things up with compelling pairs. A few entries evoke those little "aha!" moments that any lover of language will cherish. I particularly appreciated the effort to include extensive notes at the end — a treasure chest for those wanting deeper dives into certain words.
However, I fear I can’t fully endorse this book to the general reader, nor can I recommend it as a school library treasure given a few adult-oriented entries like "kink vs. fetish." Perhaps it would be best suited for quirky gift-giving to fellow word enthusiasts or for those who thrive on the esoteric aspects of language.
In conclusion, while I experienced intrigue and entertainment, Dictionary of Fine Distinctions should have stayed more grounded in its title. Those eager to explore the subtleties of language will undoubtedly appreciate the effort, but for a casual reader, this may just be too much of a good thing. I would rate it three stars, not for the lack of effort but for the ambition that spreads itself too thin.
